A shopkeeper mixed two varieties of rice of prices Rs.36/kg and Rs.24/kg in the ratio of 1 : 2, respectively. He sold the mixture for Rs.2,100 to earn a profit of 25%.Find the quantity of rice of cost Rs.24/kg used in the mixture.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 40 kg.

Selling Price  = Cost Price  + 25 %   of CP  = 1.25 × CP

2100 = 1.25 × CP ⇒CP=21001.25=1680 \Rightarrow \text{CP} = \frac{2100}{1.25} = 1680

Mixture ratio is 1 : 2 → total parts = 3

Let total quantity = x kg

CP per kg  = (1×36)+(2×24)1+2=36+483=843=28 \frac{(1 \times 36) + (2 \times 24)}{1 + 2} = \frac{36 + 48}{3} = \frac{84}{3} = 28 \,Rs/kg

Total CP  =  Quantity × CP per kg  ⇒1680=x×28⇒x=168028=60 \Rightarrow 1680 = x \times 28 \Rightarrow x = \frac{1680}{28} = 60 \,  kg

Mixture ratio = 1 : 2 (Rs.36 : Rs.24)

Total parts = 3

So quantity of Rs.24/kg rice =23×60=40 \frac{2}{3} \times 60 = 40 kg
