A mixture contains acid and water in the ratio of 5 : 3. If 12 litres of water is added to it. then the ratio of acid and water becomes 5 : 6. What is the quantity of acid in the mixture?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 20 litres.

Given that, ratio of acid and water in the mixture = 5 : 3

Let the amount of acid ans water in the mixture be 5x and 3x respectively.

According to the given question,

5x3x+12=56{5x \over 3x + 12} = {5 \over 6}

⇒ 3x + 12 = 6x

⇒ 3x = 12

⇒ x = 4

Quantity of acid = 5x

⇒ 5 × 4 = 20 litres

Hence the quantity of acid in the mixture is 20 litres.
