A man standing on the top of a 120 m high tower observes the angles of depression of two cars on opposite sides of the tower to be 30° and 45°. What is the distance between the two cars?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 4 i.e.  120(3+1)120 ( \sqrt{3} +1) m.

Angle of depression to first car = 30° ⇒ Angle of elevation from car to top = 30°

Angle of depression to second car = 45° ⇒ Angle of elevation to top = 45°

Let distance of first car from tower = d1

tan⁡30∘=120d1\tan 30^\circ = \frac{120}{d_1}

⇒ d1=120tan⁡30∘=1201/3=1203d_1 = \frac{120}{\tan 30^\circ} = \frac{120}{1/\sqrt{3}} = 120\sqrt{3} m

Let distance of second car from tower = d2

tan⁡45∘=120d2\tan 45^\circ = \frac{120}{d_2}

⇒ d2=1201=120d_2 = \frac{120}{1} = 120 m

Distance between cars = d1 + d2 =1203+120=120(3+1)=120\sqrt{3} + 120 = 120(\sqrt{3} + 1) m
