A man buys 35 pens for a rupee. How many pens should he sell for a rupee to earn a profit of 40 percent?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 2 i.e. 25.

The man buys 35 pens for Rs. 1

⇒ C.P. per pen = 1/35 rupees/pen

To earn 40% profit

⇒ S.P. = C.P. × (1 + 40%)

⇒ S.P. = C.P. × (1 + 0.40)

⇒ S.P. = 1/35 × 1.40

⇒ S.P. = 1/25 rupees

Thus, S.P. per pen is Rs. 1/25

The number of pens sold for Rs.1 = Rs.1/Rs. 1/25/pen

⇒ 1/1/25 = 25 pens

Therefore, to earn a 40% profit, he should sell 25 pens for 1 rupee
