A fraction 35\frac{3}{5} is decreased by 25\frac{2}{5}. The resulting fraction is then increased by 20%. What is the percentage decrease/increase in the value of the original fraction?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. Decrease, 60%.

According to the given question,

35−25{3 \over 5} - {2 \over 5} = 151 \over 5

This is further increased by 20%,

⇒ 15×120100{1 \over 5} \times {120 \over 100} = 6256 \over 25

Now, decrease percentage = (old fraction - new fraction)/old fraction × 100

⇒ Decrease percentage = 35−62535×100{{{3 \over 5} - {6 \over 25}}\over {3 \over 5}}\times 100

⇒ 15−62535×100{{{15 - 6}\over 25}\over {3 \over 5}}\times 100

⇒ 92535×100{{9\over 25}\over {3 \over 5}}\times 100 = 60%

Hence the required answer is decrease,60%.
