A drink is made by mixing water and juice in the ratio 9 : 7. If x litres of water and 2x litres of juice are mixed in 160 litres of drink, then the new ratio becomes 13 : 15. The quantity of drink (in litres) is:

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 280.

According to the given question,

Quantity of water in 160 L of drink = 916×160{9 \over 16} \times 160 = 90 L

Quantity of juice in 160 L of drink = 716×160{7 \over 16} \times 160 = 70 L

When x L water and 2x L juice is added,

90+x70+2x=1315{{90 + x}\over {70 + 2x}} = {13 \over 15}

⇒ 1350 + 15x = 910 + 26x

⇒ 11x = 440

⇒ x = 40 L

The quantity of new drink = 90 + x + 70 + 2x 
⇒ 90 + 40 + 70 + 80 = 280 L

Hence the quantity of drink (in litres) is 280.
