A dishonest dealer sells an article at a 10% loss on the cost price but uses a weight of 40 g instead of 50 g. What is his percentage of profit?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 12.5%.

Let the cost price of 50g article be 100.

SP = CP × 100−L100{100 - L}\over 100

SP of 50 g article = 100  × 100−10100{100 - 10}\over 100 = 90

But the dealer uses 40g instead of 50 g,

SP of 40 g article = 90

Now, CP of 40g article = 10050×40{100 \over 50} \times 40 = 80

Profit = SP - CP

⇒ 90 - 80 = 10

Profit percentage = PCP×100{P \over CP} \times 100

⇒ 1080×100{10 \over 80} \times 100 = 12.5%

Hence the percentage of profit is 12.5%.
