A cylindrical glass with a diameter of 20 cm has the juice to a height of 9 cm. An ice cube of size 8 cm is completely immersed in it. How much will the juice level rise in the glass? (Use π = 3.142 and answer correctly up to the nearest mm)

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1, i.e., 16 mm.

We need to calculate the rise in juice level after immersing the ice cube.

Volume of ice cube = side3 = 8 × 8 × 8 = 512 cm3

Base radius of cylindrical glass = diameter ÷ 2 = 20 ÷ 2 = 10 cm

Base area of cylinder = π × r2 = 3.142 × 102 = 3.142 × 100 = 314.2 cm2

Rise in juice level = Volume displaced ÷ Base area

= 512 ÷ 314.2 = 1.629 cm

Convert to mm = 1.629 × 10 = 16.29 mm ≈ 16 mm.
