A composite solid is formed by placing a cone, which has a radius of 2 cm and a height of 6 cm, on top of a right circular cylinder. The cylinder's radius is twice that of the cone, and its height is also double that of the cone. What is the ratio of the volume of the cone to that of the cylinder?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

Cone: r = 2 cm, h = 6 cm

Cylinder: r = 4 cm, h = 12 cm

Volume of Cone = (1/3)πr²h

Volume of Cylinder = πr²h

Cone =13π(22)(6)=13π(4)(6)=8π= \frac{1}{3}\pi (2^2)(6) = \frac{1}{3}\pi (4)(6) = 8\pi

Cylinder =π(42)(12)=π(16)(12)=192π= \pi (4^2)(12) = \pi (16)(12) = 192\pi

Ratio = 8π : 192π = 1 : 24
