A bucket has 60 litres of a solution with sugar and water in the ratio 5:1. If 12 litres of the solution are replaced with water, what is the new ratio?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

Given:

Total solution = 60 liters, Ratio (Sugar : Water) = 5 : 1

According to the formula:

Part = (Ratio / Total Parts) × Total Quantity

Total parts = 5 + 1 = 6

Sugar = (5/6) × 60 = 50

Water = (1/6) × 60 = 10

12 liters of the mixture was removed.

Sugar removed = (5/6) × 12 = 10

Water removed = (1/6) × 12 = 2

Remaining sugar = 50 − 10 = 40

Remaining water = 10 − 2 = 8

Now, 12 liters of water was added.

New water quantity = 8 + 12 = 20

Final ratio = 40 : 20 = 2 : 1
