A bottle is filled with liquid of which 4 parts are water and 5 parts are fruit extract. How much of the mixture must be drawn off and replaced with water so that the mixture may by half water and half fruit extract?

Explanation:

Let the 'X' quantity of mixture be replaced with water so that the mixture may by half water and half fruit extract

According to the question

⇒ (4 - (4X94X \over 9) + X) = (5 - (5X95X \over 9))

⇒ 4 - (4X94X \over 9) + X = 5 - (5X95X \over 9)

⇒ 5X95X \over 9 + 5X95X \over 9 = 1

⇒ 10X910X \over 9 = 1

⇒ X = 9109 \over 10

Hence, the part of the mixture replaced  (910×19{9 \over 10} \times {1 \over 9}) = 110\frac{1}{10}
