9 years ago, the average age of a family of five members was 33 years. Now, three new members join whose ages are in ascending order with consecutive gaps of 8 years. If the present average age of the family is the same as it was 9 years ago, what is the age (in years) of the eldest new member?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

Correct Answer is option 2 i.e. 26

Understanding

Application

Suppose the age of youngest new member = x

Then,

Age of middle member = x + 8

And

Age of eldest member = x + 16

The total age of 5 members = 33 × 5 = 165

Total age of 8 members at present = 33 × 8 = 264

And

Total age of 5 members at present = 165 + 45 = 210

Total age of 3 new members at present = 264 – 210 = 54

According to question:

x + x + 8 + x + 16 = 54

⇒ 3x + 24 = 54

⇒ 3x = 30

⇒ x = 10

Hence, age of eldest new member = 10 + 16 = 26 years
