Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 220

Given:

45% of the total candidates who appeared for an examination were girls.

75% of the boys and 80% of the girls passed, and 144 girls failed.

Calculations:

Let the number of students be 100x

Total number of boys = 55% of 100x = 55x

Total number of girls = 100x - 55x = 45x

Number of girls failed = 20% of 45x = 9x

⇒ 9x = 144

⇒ x = 16

Number of boys failed = 25% of 55x = 13.75x

⇒ 13.75 × 16 = 220
