12 years ago, the ratio of the ages of Ram and Laxman was 2 ∶ 1 After 13 years from now, the ratio of their ages will be 9 ∶ 7 The sum of their present ages is:

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 54.

Let the present ages of Ram and Laxman be R and L respectively.

According to the given question, R−12L−12=21\frac{R - 12}{L - 12} = \frac{2}{1}

⇒ R - 12 = 2L - 24

⇒ R = 2L - 12   ...(i)

Also, R+13L+13=97\frac{R + 13}{L + 13} = \frac{9}{7}

⇒ 7R + 91 = 9L + 117

Putting the value of R from equation (i),

⇒ 7(2L - 12) - 9L = 26

⇒ 5L = 110

⇒ L = 22

And, R = 2(22) - 12    (from equation (i))

⇒ R = 32 

Now, required answer = 32 + 22 = 54
