SSC CGL - 4th June 2019 - Shift 2 • Reasoning • Q93

10 years ago, a father’s age was 3.5 times that of his son, and 10 years from now, the father’s age will be 2.25 times that of the son. What will be the sum of the ages of the father and the son at present?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 110 years

Understanding Application

Suppose the present age of father is F and present age of son is S.

According to the question:

10 years ago:

F - 10 = 7/2 (S-10)

2F - 20 = 7S - 70

7S - 2F = 50 .............. (1)

10 years from now:

F + 10 = 9/4(S+10)

4F + 40 = 9S + 90

4F - 9S = 50 .............. (2)

On solving both the equations-

We get,

S = 30 & F = 80

Sum of their present ages = 80 + 30 = 110 years
