10 women take 16 days to complete a work which can be completed by 6 men in 8 days. 12 men started working and after 2 days 6 men left, and 5 women joined them. In how many days will the work be completed?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 265\frac{26}{5}.

Let the work done by 1 man in 1 day be M and by 1 woman in 1 day be W

Since the total work remains the same

(10W)16 = (6M)8

⇒ MW=103\frac{M}{W} = \frac{10}{3}

Let M = 10 units and W = 3 units

Hence total work = 10 × 3 × 16 = 480 units

Work completed by 12 men in 2 days = 12 × 10 × 2 = 240 units
After 2 days, 6 men left and 5 women joined

Let them work for d days

The work done by them = (6 × 10 + 5 × 3)d

Hence, 240 + (6 × 10 + 5 × 3)d = 480

⇒ (6 × 10 + 5 × 3)d = 240

⇒ 75d = 240

⇒ d = 24075\frac{240}{75}

Hence, the work will be completed in 24075\frac{240}{75} + 2  = 265\frac{26}{5} days
